Technical Surveillance Counter Measures (TSCM), is a counterintelligence activity that refers to the countermeasures employed to detect or defeat attempts to gain information, whether privileged, confidential or of a personal nature. This activity occurs through the use of eavesdropping or other listening devices. Commonly referred to as electronic countermeasures, debugging or sweeping, a TSCM will detect the presence and location of active and passive surveillance equipment. In certain circumstances we will be able to detect evidence of past surveillance activity.

TSCM tradecraft encompasses many unrelated disciplines including: electronics, communications technology, locking devices, alarm systems, chemical munitions, photography, video, automobile systems, building construction, HVAC systems, fire alarm systems, access control systems, computer systems, surveillance systems, electronic concepts of audio communications and covert operations. It is the culmination of the above skills set needed to perform an effective TSCM sweep. TSCM professionals are being sought with more frequency and concern as emerging technology
